KUALA LUMPUR – Government special-purpose vehicle Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) said three devices have now been added to the list of smartphones compatible with Malaysia’s 5G Network.

In a statement, DNB – which is the nation’s 5G single-wholesale-network provider – said the Samsung Flip 3, Samsung Fold 3 and Oppo A77 will be able to access the 5G network here, bringing the total number of 5G-compatible smartphones available for purchase to 83.

It said users can contact their brand manufacturer or service provider for more information.

However, DNB asserted that it does not “certify” or “approve” 5G devices.

The coverage area for 5G connectivity and the full list of compatible devices can be viewed at https://www.digital-nasional.com.my/interactive-map#map.

“DNB provides facilities for the device manufacturers to conduct tests such as initial static tests, as well as a test route to conduct their on-the-road drive tests so their devices can be configured, and firmware updated to be compatible with the 5G network,” the statement read.

“Device certification is led by Sirim – with guidance from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission – as is standard procedure.”

Government-owned DNB has been tasked with building the nation’s infrastructure for 5G, which is the next exciting stage of mobile telephony, and telcos must subscribe to gain access and subsequently offer products and services to consumers.

The nation’s four major telcos – Celcom, Digi, Maxis and U Mobile, collectively known in the industry by its CDMU moniker – have been seen to be in lockstep in their resistance to the implementation of the national 5G service.

Thus far, only Telekom Malaysia and YTL have signed up to offer 5G services.

The CDMU’s collective rejection means that their subscribers could only enjoy a better mobile experience if they were to roam abroad. – The Vibes, June 7, 2022
