FAQs On 5G Devices

Why does it take longer to certify some devices and not others?

Submitted by admin on Fri, 05/20/2022 - 11:19

The time taken for a device to be 5G ready is dependent on the specific processes of the individual manufacturers. DNB is not involved in the certification of the devices.

Please contact your local telecommunications service provider and/or brand manufacturer for more information on the availability of 5G devices in Malaysia.

Does DNB certify and approve devices to be 5G-enabled and how long would it usually take for a 5G device to be “certified” for use in Malaysia?

Submitted by admin on Tue, 05/17/2022 - 19:22

DNB does not certify nor approve 5G devices. We only provide facilities for the manufacturers to conduct tests such as initial static tests, as well as a test route to conduct their on-the-road drive tests so their devices can be configured, and firmware updated to be compatible with the 5G network.

Meanwhile, device certification is led by SIRIM – with guidance from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) – as is standard procedure.

Is it really necessary for a user to obtain a 5G-supported device in order to utilise Malaysia’s 5G network?

Yes, it is. It must be a 5G-capable device that has been configured to support the 5G network. Device manufacturers’ local entities should ensure that their devices can support the various services that will be delivered to the customer via the local 5G network.
